EPA - Lead Safe - RRP (Renovation, Repair and Painting)

  • Applies to houses built before 1978.
  • If scraping or sanding more than 20 sq ft exterior paint, need to do lead test.
  • If scraping or sanding more than 6 sq ft interior paint, then need to do lead test on applicable room.
  • Rules apply only to work done for compensation (unless a HUD). Therefore, if homeowner wants to remove contaminated paint, EPA rules do not apply.
  • Please call regarding HUD Homes. Rules are more strict.
  • We anticipate the majority of testing for paint jobs will show that lead is not present. Most homes have been painted many times since lead was sometimes an ingredient (over 30 yrs ago). If lead test is positive, we anticipate additional costs of approximately 30% for affected areas (very rough approximation).
  • The primary worries are: Sanding - creates lots of dust that can be inhaled & Scraping - kids may eat the paint chips.
  • Removal of a window always requires a lead test in houses built before 1978.
